About My Own Mind
Why are we here?
Learning is not one way...
My name is Charlotte Knudsen, and I am the director of My Own Mind. As a dyslexic and neurodivergent student, my school years were filled with challenges that often left me feeling misunderstood and underestimated. Traditional learning methods rarely worked for me, and it wasn’t until I began to truly understand how I learn that things started to shift. Learning how to learn became a lifelong, empowering journey—one that transformed frustration into confidence. That journey inspired me to create My Own Mind Tutoring, a space where students are seen, heard, and supported as individuals. I believe every student deserves to understand their unique learning style and be equipped with tools that work for them—not just for one subject or year, but for life. Through personalised, strengths-based support, me and my team aim to help students not only succeed academically but also build a lasting belief in their abilities. Because when students own their minds, they unlock their potential.
What is the same in all our sessions?
Academic confidence
We don't focus on grade output (unless that's the student's goal). We focus on supporting all our students to become confident learners who know strategies to support themselves when they struggle.
Understanding your learning
Many students struggle to understand how they learn best. We help students discover effective learning strategies that work for them and develop the skills to apply these strategies throughout their educational journey.
Self advocacy
We support our students in developing the skills to write emails asking for help and initiate conversations about how they learn, including advocating for changes that would better support them in the classroom.
Go at your pace
School can introduce a lot of new information in a short amount of time. We work at your pace to help you build a strong understanding of each concept, so you can retain what you learn and confidently build on that knowledge in the years to come.
How many sessions per term?
Our term structure is based on the public School system; however, our Year 11s and 12s generally finish earlier in Term 4.
Term 1
11 weeks - Starting in late January
Term 2
10 weeks
Term 3
10 weeks
Term 4
9 weeks - Finishing mid December
Multisensory Learning
At My Own Mind Tutoring, we believe every student learns differently—and that's something to celebrate. That’s why we use multisensory learning, engaging sight, sound, movement, and touch to make learning stick in a meaningful and memorable way. We build confidence, spark curiosity, and unlock true potential by tailoring each session to fit how a student learns best. We don’t fit students into a mould—we shape learning around them. Because when education is personalised and interactive, it doesn’t just teach—it empowers.
The first session is always for building rapport and understanding what supports your student needs
The intro session is an opportunity for the tutor and student to get to know each other and build rapport. We don't want students to think that there is a power dynamic in our sessions. We build sessions around what your student needs, in collaboration with them.
For our younger primary students who need foundational support in English and Maths, the first session also helps us identify any gaps in understanding based on the South Australian Curriculum requirements.
For our older students, we use the first session to understand what supports they need
Subject content
Study skills
Organisational skills
And create a collaborative plan for ongoing support.
Post-session reflection
Reflecting on what you've just learnt immediately after finishing a session is absolutely fantastic for long-term memory retention. At the end of each session students will explain what activities they did and what they learnt.
This also doubles as a post-session check-in so parents and guardians know what is covered in sessions.
